Saving for a child: start early, keep options open

Nobody knows what a child will choose later. A small monthly amount over many years can create room — for parents, grandparents and godparents alike.

How it works → — Understand first. Then decide.

The question

What should there be room for later?

A thought anchor — not a contract. Possible purposes, not a checklist.

Possible purposes

Pick a thought. The text stays with the possibility; no product name.

Apprenticeship, degree or further study: money can ease choices; it does not make them.

Deposit, first furniture, a month when living alone costs more than expected.

Mobility — the option to reach places, not the car itself.

Time elsewhere — a door that can stay open without fixing the life plan.

A pot without a fixed purpose today; the use can come later.

Workshop, start-up, something self-built — space for an idea that does not exist yet.

Keep options open, not a return promise. Size and timing stay open.

Example

50 € × 18 years

10,800 € in contributions

Sum of contributions at 50 € from birth to 18 — not a maturity value, not a promise. The calculator can show other amounts.

Assumptions. 18 × 12 × 50 = 10,800. No costs, growth or withdrawals.

Assumptions. Monthly compounding at the chosen rate (0–18 %). Lump sum at the start of the span, then monthly payments. No costs, tax, inflation, withdrawals or contract.

Illustrative example only, not a forecast, guarantee or advice. Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future results. Inputs are not stored.

No name, date of birth or address. The calculation stays in the browser.

Why time matters

Lost months cannot be bought back

From birth to 18 there are 216 months. A later start means fewer months with contributions — past months are gone.

What happens to invested money stays open. Markets rise and fall; a longer span is not a promise, but it allows a long run.

Typical stages — training, first independent steps, own ideas, long-term options — may need room without dictating the path.

Starting earlier means more months — not more certainty.

Possible paths

Clarify the goal first — then, if it fits, a path

Four paths in the ERGO Vorsorge Lebensversicherung AG range on this tied-agency site. Not a ranking; each card states can, cannot and risk.

Purpose still open

Training, flat, licence, time abroad, a project — purpose can come before any product name.

Long run

Contributions can run for many years. Outcome stays open; missed months are not recoverable.

Living with volatility

Funds can fall. Contribution guarantees, where described, refer to paid-in amounts — not growth.

Who holds the contract later

Parents, grandparents or godparents can pay. Handover at majority or career start is described in the product information.

Once these questions are clearer, four paths in the ERGO range can be compared — none fits every child automatically.

Chance

Money in funds without a contribution guarantee?

Can
Up to 20 funds selectable and payable in parallel.
Cannot
No contribution guarantee described for this path.
Risk
Falling markets can reduce the fund value — investment risk on the fund part.
Investment

Contributions in chosen funds; up to 20 at once.

Rising or falling prices — losses possible.

Balance

Mix funds and a classic part?

Can
Split between funds and classic security assets — adjustable both ways.
Cannot
Protection in the documents applies to the classic part — not funds, not a return promise.
Risk
Fund part: market upside and downside.
Classic part

Protection of the classic part; optional index participation or surplus credit.

Surplus not fixed; fund part market-linked.

Dynamik

Funds with a selectable contribution guarantee?

Can
Selectable contribution guarantee; documents cite 10–100 % at end of term.
Cannot
Guarantee is not a promise of growth.
Risk
Fund share can fall; documents say price drops do not endanger the guarantee — not a performance promise.
Mix

Mostly funds or ERGO portfolios; mix is adjusted over time.

Guarantee refers to end of term — not return.

Index

Lock in contributions at a stated point?

Can
From 12 years’ term: 100 % of scheduled contributions at pension start; lump sum from 5 years.
Cannot
Surplus participation not guaranteed; set anew each year.
Risk
Upside tied to index or surplus — can lag example illustrations.
Upside

Index: MSCI World in euro or Munich Re World Wide Trend Index; or surplus interest or a mix.

Guarantee: scheduled contributions at the date — not growth.

ERGO Zukunfts-Chance (ERGO Life S.A., Luxembourg) is not detailed here; it may come up in a call if relevant.

Questions

Common questions

Is 10,800 € what will be paid out?

No — that is 50 € per month over 18 years. Costs, market movement and withdrawals are excluded. No payout at that level is promised.

Why 50 € and not 25 €?

50 € is a clear example from the documents. 25 € is the published minimum monthly contribution (or 2,500 € lump sum). 25 € over 18 years = 5,400 € — not a recommendation.

Can lost time be made up?

No. Birth to 18: 216 months. Starting at 15 leaves 36 months — less time, not a moral judgement.

Can grandparents or godparents pay?

Yes — policyholder can be a parent, grandparent or someone else. Top-ups from 100 € are described on the product page.

Can the child run the contract later?

Product information cites takeover at majority or career start — the child becomes policyholder.

What separates the four paths?

Chance: funds without contribution guarantee. Balance: mix. Dynamik: funds with selectable guarantee. Index: contribution guarantee plus index/surplus. See the cards above.

What about a pause or withdrawal?

Product page: payment holidays, adjustable contributions, top-ups from 100 €, withdrawals from 500 € up to twice a year if enough value — described as fee-free. Each pause or withdrawal reduces contract value. Terms prevail.
